Forget the usual; this Grilled Fruit Sangria promises a refreshing, deeply flavorful experience that will leave your guests in awe and craving more. It’s the perfect blend of smoky sweetness, vibrant fruitiness, and classic wine cocktail charm.

The Secret Ingredient: Why Grilled Fruit Transforms Your Sangria

The concept of grilling fruit for a cocktail might sound a bit unconventional, perhaps even “crazy” to some! But trust us, this isn’t just a quirky idea; it’s a game-changer. While we’re not actually grilling the sangria itself, the magic happens when peaches, apples, oranges, and lemons meet the open flame. Grilling these fruits unlocks a whole new dimension of flavor that simply cannot be achieved with raw fruit alone. The high heat caramelizes their natural sugars, intensifying their sweetness and creating complex, smoky notes that beautifully complement the robust flavors of red wine.

This isn’t my first rodeo with grilled beverages. A couple of years ago, I whipped up a Grilled Strawberry Lemonade that was an absolute sensation. Its popularity during my “Grill Your Whole Meal” segment on San Diego 6 News proved that grilling fruit for drinks is a brilliant, delicious concept, inspiring me to explore even more grilled cocktail possibilities. The process pulls out all the succulent juices and aromatic flavors, infusing them deeply into the sangria, creating a richness and depth that’s truly unmatched. The cinnamon sugar coating added before grilling adds another layer of warmth and spice, creating an irresistible treat.

A Flavorful Journey: Beyond Just a Drink

Drinking this sangria is a true delight, but what truly elevates the experience is savoring the cinnamon sugar grilled fruit at the bottom of your glass. It’s an “O-M-G yum!” moment you won’t soon forget. Each bite of fruit is bursting with caramelized sweetness, a hint of smoky char, and the comforting warmth of cinnamon. It’s a cocktail and a dessert all in one, offering a textural and flavor contrast that makes every sip and every bite memorable. The grilled peaches become incredibly tender and juicy, the apples soften beautifully, and the oranges and lemons release their aromatic oils and concentrated citrus punch.

The Perfect Refreshment for Any Summer Celebration

If you’re on the hunt for a distinctive and delightful twist on classic red wine sangria to impress at your upcoming summer barbecues, pool parties, or holiday gatherings like Memorial Day, this Grilled Fruit Sangria is precisely what you need. It’s not just a drink; it’s a conversation starter and a highlight of any menu. The preparation is surprisingly simple and fits seamlessly into your grilling agenda. You can fire up the grill, toss the fruit on to achieve that perfect char, then prepare the sangria base and let it chill in the refrigerator while you focus on grilling the rest of your meal. This advanced preparation makes hosting a breeze, allowing you to relax and enjoy the company of your guests, knowing a spectacular beverage is waiting to be served.

This vibrant sangria pairs wonderfully with a variety of summer dishes. Imagine serving it alongside savory grilled delights like Chipotle Lime Chicken Fajita Skewers, or complementing it with side dishes such as Grilled Deconstructed Mexican Street Corn. And for dessert, what could be better than the campfire classic with a twist, Grilled Berry S’Mores? The rich, fruity notes of the sangria will beautifully enhance these flavors, creating a harmonious and unforgettable meal.

Grilled Fruit Red Wine Sangria Recipe

This recipe yields approximately 10 servings (8 oz each) of delightful sangria.

  • Prep Time: 15 minutes
  • Refrigeration Time: 1 hour 30 minutes (allowing fruit to cool and flavors to meld)
  • Total Time: 1 hour 45 minutes
  • Author: Whitney Bond
  • Course: Drinks
  • Cuisine: Spanish

Ingredients

  • 2 peaches, cored & sliced
  • 2 apples, cored & sliced
  • 2 oranges, cut into ¼ inch slices
  • 2 lemons, cut into ¼ inch slices
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 4 tbsp sugar (divided)
  • 2 (750 ml) bottles Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 1 cup brandy
  • ½ cup triple sec
  • ½ cup orange juice
  • 2 cups sparkling water
  • 3 cups frozen grapes (for chilling without dilution)

Optional Garnishes:

  • For a cinnamon sugar rim: 2 tbsp sugar + 1 tsp ground cinnamon + juice of 1 lemon

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, toss the sliced peaches, apples, oranges, and lemons with 1 tsp of ground cinnamon and 2 tbsp of sugar until evenly coated.
  2. Preheat your grill to medium heat. Once hot, carefully add the cinnamon-sugar coated fruit to the grill grates.
  3. Grill the fruit for 2-4 minutes per side, or until beautiful grill marks appear and the fruit begins to soften and caramelize. Be careful not to overcook.
  4. Remove the grilled fruit from the grill and set aside.
  5. In a large pitcher or punch bowl, combine the grilled oranges and lemons.
  6. Using a muddler or the back of a sturdy spoon, gently muddle the oranges and lemons with the remaining 2 tbsp of sugar. This helps release their juices and integrate the sugar.
  7. Add the grilled peaches and apples to the pitcher with the muddled citrus.
  8. Place the pitcher in the refrigerator for 20-30 minutes to allow the grilled fruit to cool completely. This step is crucial to prevent the sangria from becoming warm.
  9. Once the fruit has cooled, remove the pitcher from the refrigerator. Pour in the two bottles of Cabernet Sauvignon, brandy, triple sec, and orange juice. Stir gently to combine all the ingredients.
  10. Return the sangria to the refrigerator for at least one hour to allow the flavors to meld and deepen. For best results, let it chill for 2-4 hours, or even overnight.
  11. To Serve (Optional Cinnamon Sugar Rim): If desired, prepare a festive cinnamon sugar rim for your glasses. In a shallow dish, mix 1 tsp of ground cinnamon and 2 tbsp of sugar. Dip the rim of each glass first into fresh lemon juice, then into the cinnamon sugar mixture.
  12. Add a handful of frozen grapes to each prepared glass. The frozen grapes will keep your sangria perfectly chilled without diluting its rich flavor.
  13. Fill each glass approximately ¾ of the way with the chilled grilled fruit sangria, ensuring each serving gets a generous portion of the delicious grilled fruit.
  14. Top off each glass with sparkling water for a refreshing fizz and a lighter finish. Serve immediately and enjoy!
