Crafting the Perfect Holiday Centerpiece: The Christmas Tree Cheese Board

Inspired by the art of beautifully arranged food, particularly from my friend Maegan’s insightful cookbook, Beautiful Boards, I embarked on a journey to create a truly festive cheese board for the holidays. After all, what better way to embody the season of cheer than with a lavish spread of delicious cheeses, meats, and fresh produce? This Christmas Tree Shaped board is more than just an appetizer; it’s an edible work of art that captures the joyous spirit of Christmas.

This particular board is generously adorned with an array of premium cheeses, savory summer sausage, and plump, juicy grapes. It's then elegantly garnished with fragrant fresh rosemary, reminiscent of pine needles, and crunchy pecans, forming the tree's sturdy trunk. To complement this delightful arrangement, you can serve your choice of crispy crackers, thinly sliced baguette, or even a charming mason jar brimming with breadsticks on the side. The beauty of this board lies in its versatility and ease of assembly, allowing you to tailor it perfectly to any holiday gathering.

One of the best aspects of creating this Christmas Tree Cheese Board is its incredible simplicity and adaptability. Whether you're hosting an intimate family dinner or a grand holiday party, you can effortlessly scale the board to your desired size. The measurements provided in this recipe are ideal for serving 4-6 people, making it perfect for smaller celebrations or as a substantial appetizer for a medium-sized group. However, feel free to adjust the quantities of each ingredient up or down to accommodate more or fewer guests, ensuring every party-goer gets a taste of this festive delight. This board is not just guaranteed to be a crowd-pleaser; it's a vibrant, fun, and utterly delicious addition that will undoubtedly become the talking point of your holiday spread.

How to make your Christmas Tree Cheese Board

Creating this stunning Christmas Tree Shaped Holiday Cheese Board is an enjoyable and straightforward process. Follow these detailed steps to assemble a festive masterpiece that will impress all your guests:

  1. Lay the Foundation with Red Grapes: Begin by carefully arranging a layer of vibrant red grapes along the bottom edge of your chosen serving tray or cutting board. These grapes will form the widest base of your Christmas tree, establishing a rich color and a fresh, sweet component. Ensure they are clean and dry before placing them.
  2. First Cheese Layer - White Stilton: Above the red grapes, create your first layer of cubed cheese. For this design, I highly recommend a distinctive white stilton cheese, especially one with cranberries, which adds both a festive color and a delightful tang. Trader Joe's often carries excellent options. Arrange these cubes neatly to form the next, slightly narrower tier of your tree.
  3. Introduce Savory Summer Sausage: Next, place a layer of finely diced or thinly sliced summer sausage directly above the stilton cheese. The savory notes of the sausage beautifully complement the sweetness of the grapes and the richness of the cheese. For a vegetarian alternative, or simply to add more freshness, you could substitute diced or sliced salami, or even an additional layer of grapes.
  4. Second Cheese Layer - Sharp Cheddar: Add another layer of cubed cheese above the summer sausage. This time, opt for a robust and flavorful choice like Cabot Seriously Sharp Cheddar. Arrange these cheddar cubes so that this row is visibly shorter and narrower than the summer sausage layer below it, further defining the Christmas tree shape. The contrast in cheese types adds depth in flavor and appearance.
  5. Brighten with Green Grapes: Place a few clusters of bright green grapes above the cheddar cheese. These act as natural "ornaments" on your tree, adding a pop of refreshing color and another layer of fruity sweetness.
  6. The Star Topper and Festive Accents: For that extra adorable and unmistakably Christmas-like finish, take a small star cookie cutter (a mini star cutter works wonders) and cut out a cheese star from a block of cheddar or another firm cheese. Carefully place this star at the very top of your tree. You can also cut a few smaller stars and scatter them artfully on top of the sausage and red grape layers for added sparkle.
  7. Add the "Pine Needles" with Rosemary: To mimic the lush foliage of a Christmas tree, gently slide 4-5 sprigs of fresh rosemary under the various layers of meat, cheeses, and grapes on each side of the board. The aromatic rosemary not only looks authentic but also imparts a lovely, subtle fragrance to the board.
  8. Form the Tree Trunk with Pecans: Complete your edible tree by placing 4 whole pecans at the very bottom, just below the widest layer of red grapes. These sturdy nuts beautifully represent the tree's trunk, adding a final touch of rustic charm and a satisfying crunch.
  9. Optional Accompaniments: Arrange your chosen crackers directly around the base and sides of your Christmas tree on the board, creating an inviting spread. Alternatively, for a more structured presentation, serve them in small, elegant bowls on the side. I often prefer serving thin and crispy breadsticks upright in mason jars alongside the board, offering both variety and an appealing visual element.

Selecting the Best Cheeses for Your Board

When crafting a holiday cheese board, especially one shaped like a Christmas tree, the choice of cheese is paramount. For visual appeal and ease of arrangement into neat cubes, I typically gravitate towards hard or semi-hard cheeses. These varieties hold their shape well and provide a good textural contrast to softer elements on the board. While I used a delightful cranberry stilton and sharp cheddar in this specific recipe, the possibilities for customization are endless. Here are some other excellent cheese recommendations that you can use in place of, or in addition to, the ones mentioned, ensuring a rich variety of flavors and textures:

  • Gouda: A classic choice, known for its smooth texture and mild, slightly sweet, and nutty flavor. Aged Gouda offers a more intense caramel-like profile.
  • Blue Cheese: For those who appreciate a bold flavor, a good blue cheese offers a piquant, salty, and creamy experience. Its distinct aroma and beautiful marbling can add sophistication.
  • Gorgonzola: Similar to blue cheese but often creamier and with a slightly milder, sweeter undertone. It's excellent for pairing with fruits and honey.
  • Gruyere: A firm, savory, and slightly nutty cheese with a wonderfully complex flavor that can range from sweet to earthy depending on its age.
  • Swiss: Recognizable by its characteristic holes, Swiss cheese is mild, nutty, and slightly sweet, making it a crowd-pleaser and a great base cheese.
  • Parmesan: A hard, granular cheese with a rich, sharp, and savory flavor. While often grated, small chunks offer an intense flavor burst.
  • Provolone: A semi-hard Italian cheese that can be mild (dolce) or sharp (piccante). It offers a smooth texture and a pleasant, slightly tangy taste.
  • Asiago: A versatile Italian cheese that can be fresh (mild and smooth) or aged (firmer, nuttier, and sharper), providing options for different palates.
  • Manchego: A firm, buttery sheep's milk cheese from Spain with a distinctive flavor that is nutty, fruity, and slightly tangy, often with a hint of sweetness.

When selecting your cheeses, consider a mix of mild, medium, and bold flavors to cater to all preferences. Aim for at least 2-3 different types to create an exciting tasting experience.

Beyond Grapes: Creative Fruit and Vegetable Additions

While grapes are a staple on any charcuterie board, the beauty of a Christmas tree-shaped design is the opportunity to incorporate a diverse range of colors and flavors. If you're looking to swap out the grapes for something new, or simply want to add more variety to your board, here are some fantastic dried fruits, fresh fruits, and vegetables that will enhance both the visual appeal and the taste profile of your festive spread:

  • Instead of green grapes, consider these vibrant alternatives:
    • Diced Green Apples: Crisp, tart, and refreshing, green apples add a lovely crunch and a bright color.
    • Diced Pears: Sweet and juicy, pears offer a softer texture and a delicate flavor.
      • Quick tip! To prevent diced pears or apples from browning and keep them looking fresh on your board, briefly dip them in a 50/50 mixture of water and lemon juice before arranging.
    • Peeled & Sliced Kiwi: Their vibrant green color and tropical tang can add an unexpected and delightful twist.
    • Sliced Cucumbers: Crisp and cool, cucumber slices provide a refreshing counterpoint to richer cheeses and meats.
    • Green Olives: Briny and savory, green olives are a classic charcuterie companion that adds a sophisticated touch.
  • For the red grape layers, explore these rich and flavorful substitutions:
    • Dried Cranberries: Sweet and chewy with a tart kick, dried cranberries evoke classic holiday flavors and add a beautiful deep red hue.
    • Dried Figs: Naturally sweet and caramel-like, dried figs offer a luxurious texture and an elegant appearance.
    • Pitted Dates – Sliced in Half: Medjool dates, in particular, are wonderfully sweet and soft, pairing beautifully with strong cheeses. Slicing them in half makes them easier to eat and arrange.
    • Cherry Tomatoes: Fresh, juicy, and bright red, cherry tomatoes can add a burst of garden freshness and a pop of color, especially good for a more savory board.

Don't be afraid to mix and match! A combination of these options can create a truly dynamic and visually stunning Christmas tree board.
