Bring the flavor to burger night!

After the first bite I was practically speechless—just a long string of “mmmm” followed by “dang, that’s good!” This recipe was inspired by the Shack Shake French onion burger and combines sweet caramelized onions, crunchy fried onions, melted Swiss, and a tangy garlic parmesan sauce.

To boost the French onion profile I mix French onion dip seasoning and Worcestershire sauce right into the patties. The result is a juicy, savory burger that becomes truly sublime once you add the toppings. If you want a steakhouse-style burger at home, these French Onion Burgers deliver.

Key ingredients and substitution options

Below are notes on the main ingredients and easy swaps. The full ingredient list with measurements appears in the recipe card further down.

  • Worcestershire sauce – adds sweet, salty, tangy umami. Soy sauce can substitute in a pinch.
  • Ground beef – use 80/20 (80% lean, 20% fat) for juicy, tender burgers.
  • French onion seasoning – a packet of French onion soup or dip mix works well, or use a homemade French onion seasoning blend.
  • Swiss cheese – Swiss melts beautifully; for a richer profile, use grated gruyere.
  • Garlic parmesan sauce – a bottled garlic parmesan or a quick homemade version adds creaminess and tang; it’s a great finishing touch on the bun.
  • Caramelized onions – make these ahead (up to a week) and refrigerate. They take time to cook but only a few minutes of attention at a time.

What to serve with the burgers

Double down on onion goodness by serving with onion rings or extra caramelized onions turned into a French onion dip served with chips. For a steakhouse-style meal, pair the burgers with truffle fries, rosemary-parmesan sweet potato fries, or cheesy grilled potatoes.

Ingredients

Caramelized Onions

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 pound yellow onions, diced into ¼ inch squares
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt

Burgers

  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef, 80/20
  • 2 tablespoons french onion seasoning
  • 2 teaspoons worcestershire sauce
  • 4 slices swiss cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns, recommended: brioche buns
  • ¼ cup garlic parmesan sauce
  • ½ cup crispy onions

Instructions

Caramelized Onions

  • Prepare the caramelized onions up to 7 days ahead if desired.
  • Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onions, spread evenly, cook 5 minutes, sprinkle with salt, then reduce heat to medium.
  • Cook 45–60 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes, until onions are golden brown. Remove from heat and set aside.

Burgers

  • In a large bowl combine ground beef, French onion seasoning, and Worcestershire sauce. Form into four 6-ounce patties and press a shallow indentation in the center of each.
  • Heat a grill to medium-high.
  • Grill the burgers 4–5 minutes per side for medium doneness.
  • During the last 1–2 minutes, top each patty with a slice of Swiss cheese to melt.
  • Toast the buns on the grill.
  • Remove burgers and let rest 3–5 minutes on a cutting board before assembling.
  • Spread garlic parmesan sauce on the bottom buns.
  • Place burgers on the bottom buns, top with caramelized onions and crispy onions, then add the top buns.

Notes

  • For consistent patties use a kitchen scale and a burger press.
  • Let burgers rest before placing on buns to keep them juicy and prevent soggy buns—wait about 5 minutes.
  • Cooking times: 4–5 minutes per side yields medium for a 1-inch thick patty. Add about 1 minute per side for medium-well and 6–7 minutes per side for well-done.
  • Make sure the grill is hot (350–400°F) before adding the patties to achieve a good sear and retain juiciness.
  • Do not press down on burgers while cooking; flattening releases juices and reduces flavor.
  • If you don’t have a grill, cook on a grill pan, cast iron skillet, or heavy skillet over medium-high heat, following the same timing and adding cheese near the end.
