Savor the Flavors: Easy Homemade Pork Chop Suey
Life can be a whirlwind, filled with travel and exciting events. While exploring new places and opportunities is exhilarating, there’s nothing quite like returning home to the comfort of your own kitchen. For me, that means diving into new culinary experiments for the blog and whipping up beloved comfort foods for my husband, Kurt, and myself. This particular Pork Chop Suey recipe was born from one such homecoming, a delightful blend of nostalgia and fresh innovation.
March kicked off with a fantastic “Cox Smart Home” event in Gainesville, FL, hosted by Cox Communications. It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase how high-speed internet can truly revolutionize the kitchen experience. Beyond simply browsing for new recipe inspiration (which I still highly recommend doing on WhitneyBond.com!), smart kitchen devices and apps make cooking more efficient and enjoyable. Imagine a hands-free experience where a voice assistant guides you through a recipe step-by-step, or a WiFi-enabled Crock-Pot and coffee maker that allow you to manage meals and drinks remotely. These innovations truly free up time, making it easier to prepare delicious, home-cooked meals even on the busiest days.
The Inspiration Behind Our Pork Chop Suey
With an eventful month ahead, my focus shifted to creating nourishing meals at home. One dish Kurt often reminisced about from his childhood was Chinese Chop Suey. Surprisingly, despite my passion for cooking, I had never made—or even tasted—Chop Suey before! This presented a fantastic opportunity for a culinary adventure, blending his nostalgic memories with my signature approach to developing accessible and flavorful recipes.
After some delightful kitchen experimentation, we successfully crafted a dish that perfectly captured the essence of his childhood favorite while incorporating my unique twist. The result? A creation that was part cherished memory, part WhitneyBond.com innovation, and 100% undeniably delicious. It’s a testament to how traditional flavors can be beautifully reinterpreted for modern kitchens, proving that classic comfort food can be both authentic and remarkably easy to prepare.
What Makes This Pork Chop Suey Special?
At its core, Chop Suey is a versatile stir-fry, traditionally combining meat (often pork or chicken) with a medley of fresh vegetables, all coated in a rich, savory sauce. Our version starts with lean ground pork, stir-fried until perfectly browned, then combined with crisp celery, earthy shiitake mushrooms, aromatic garlic, fresh ginger, and vibrant scallions. These ingredients create a harmonious blend of textures and flavors that are both comforting and exciting.
The magic truly happens with our homemade Asian sauce, a carefully balanced concoction of oyster sauce, mirin (sweet cooking rice wine), soy sauce, and chicken broth, thickened slightly with cornstarch. This sauce delivers that quintessential umami depth characteristic of great Chinese cooking, bringing all the elements together into a cohesive and incredibly satisfying meal. The entire preparation process is streamlined, meaning you can have this flavorful dish on your table in under 20 minutes—a perfect solution for busy weeknights.
The ultimate highlight, and Kurt’s absolute favorite part, is the addition of crispy chow mein noodles. Scattered generously over the top, they provide an irresistible crunch that contrasts beautifully with the tender pork, soft rice, and vibrant vegetables, elevating each bite into a delightful experience. This recipe doesn’t just promise ease and speed; it delivers a symphony of flavors and textures that will make it a regular in your meal rotation.

Serving Suggestions and Tips for Success
This Pork Chop Suey is incredibly versatile and makes a complete meal on its own when served over rice. However, you can enhance the experience with a few simple additions. Consider starting your meal with a light Asian-inspired soup or some fresh spring rolls. For an extra vegetable boost, a side of steamed broccoli or stir-fried green beans would complement the dish beautifully. The key to a successful stir-fry is high heat and quick cooking, ensuring your vegetables remain crisp-tender and your pork is perfectly cooked without drying out.
Don’t be afraid to customize the vegetables to your liking. Bell peppers, snap peas, water chestnuts, or bamboo shoots are all excellent additions that would work wonderfully in this recipe, offering different textures and flavors. Just remember to add them at the appropriate stage of cooking to ensure they are cooked through but still retain their vibrant color and slight crunch. Fresh ingredients make all the difference, so opt for the freshest produce you can find to truly elevate this dish.
